Duet in Black and White

Jim Singelis and Linda Skipper:  Duet in Black and White opens at Knox Gallery on August 5, with a reception on Saturday, August 12, from 6 – 7:30 p.m.  Please join us for the evening!

Singelis, who works in both oil paint and charcoal, began his professional career designing scenery for theatre, film and print photography. He became so fascinated with personal computers when they were introduced in the early ‘80s that, after nearly twenty years as a set designer, he studied programming. This change allowed him to leave New York City and work out of the couple’s home in New Marlborough. In 2009 he began drawing and painting again.  

The artist states that “Each painting is a layered record of thoughts and emotions, a visual history of something interior.”

Skipper’s first love was clay, but other art paths took over and led her into a career as the head scenic artist on television’s "Law & Order" for the twenty years of its production. For many years she squeezed in a part-time pottery life, “but it could never be long or intense enough, until now,”  she says.  

Skipper’s influences include woven and hand-worked basketry, fabric, and quilting, especially the traditional Japanese work clothes mended many times over with sashiko stitching patterns. She “strives for simple, graceful, quiet, and luminous qualities” in her porcelain vessels.
